Commencement Ceremony FAQ

There will not be a separate JWMI ceremony in 2026. We encourage all JWMI graduates to participate in a 2026 Strayer University commencement ceremony.

If you are not located near a ceremony location, or unable to travel, you may participate in the December Virtual commencement ceremony.

Yes, a cap and gown is required for commencement ceremonies. JWMI candidates wear a black gown with extension on the sleeves, MBA hood, JWMI stole, JWMI cords, black cap and tassel. The stole and cords should be draped over your shoulders on top of your gown. When putting on your hood, the velvet color should be on top.

After you register for the commencement ceremony, you can order your cap and gown online through Jostens. Also, on the Josten’s website you should select Student Jack Welch Acessories to obtain your complimentary JWMI stole and cord. If you did not receive these items when ordering your cap and gown, please visit the JWMI table in the graduate area to pick them up.

Most graduates choose to wear business casual attire under their gown. All gowns will hit between the knees and mid-calf. To ensure you receive the most attractive photos while crossing the stage, we recommend that men wear long pants and women wear either pants or a skirt/dress, and comfortable shoes.

Tickets are NOT required for commencement ceremonies; graduates are welcome to bring as many guests as desired! Guest seating is first-come, first-served.

Arrival information will be included in the Graduating Student Newsletter which will be emailed to each registered graduate 4-5 weeks prior to the ceremony.

Accessible guest seating areas will be available and are first come, first served. Please direct your guests to an arena usher for assistance. More information regarding accommodations will be provided in the graduating student newsletter. Graduates who require accommodations should contact commencement@strayer.edu to ensure coordination.

We will provide students with letters of invitation to send to their family members living abroad to document the purpose of their travel to the United States. After completing the commencement registration steps, you should Sumit an application for a Visa Letter of Invitation which can be found under the Guest Visa/Travel section. Please allow 5-7 business days for the Events Team to process your request. The letter(s) will be emailed to you once completed.

Diplomas are NOT given out at commencement ceremonies. Your diploma will be issued once all of your degree requirements have been completed and the Strayer University Records department has reviewed and approved your record for conferral. Once conferral is approved, your diploma will be mailed to your home address on file. To update your address on file, please visit iCampus and click on Account Settings, My Contact Info, Show Contact and Edit Contact Information.
